Our Belt Promotion System: Aligning with IBJJF Standards

Tigers kids jiu-jitsu class students with Academy instructors

At Academy of Jiu-Jitsu Scottsdale, we are committed to providing our students with a clear, structured, and respected path in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

As part of our continued growth, we are aligning our belt promotions and timelines with the standards set by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). The IBJJF promotion guidelines are the most widely recognized in the sport and are used by academies and competitions around the world.

Why the Change?

Previously, our academy operated under the Gracie University affiliate program, which followed a different promotion structure—particularly within the kids programs. As we evolve, we believe the IBJJF system provides a clearer and more universal pathway for our students.

This alignment ensures that our students’ progress reflects internationally recognized standards in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What This Means for Little Tigers & Tigers

For our Little Tigers and Tigers programs, promotions will now be based on consistent attendance.

Students who attend class at least twice per week will be eligible to receive a stripe approximately once per month. Stripe colors will vary depending on the student’s current belt rank, following the IBJJF children’s belt system.

Our Commitment

Our goal is to reward consistency, dedication, and growth on the mats. This transition provides a structured, globally recognized system that supports long-term development in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

If you have any questions about how this change affects you or your child, please reach out to us. We are always happy to help.

Thank you for being part of our Academy family.
